Dial A for Aunties

What happens when you mix 1 (accidental) murder with 2 thousand wedding guests, and then toss in a possible curse on 3 generations of an immigrant Chinese-Indonesian family?

You get 4 meddling Asian aunties coming to the rescue!

When Meddelin Chan ends up accidentally killing her blind date, her meddlesome mother calls for her even more meddlesome aunties to help get rid of the body. Unfortunately, a dead body proves to be a lot more challenging to dispose of than one might anticipate, especially when it is inadvertently shipped in a cake cooler to the over-the-top billionaire wedding Meddy, her Ma, and aunties are working at an island resort on the California coastline. It’s the biggest job yet for the family wedding business—“Don’t leave your big day to chance, leave it to the Chans!”—and nothing, not even an unsavory corpse, will get in the way of her auntie’s perfect buttercream flowers.

But things go from inconvenient to downright torturous when Meddy’s great college love—and biggest heartbreak—makes a surprise appearance amid the wedding chaos. Is it possible to escape murder charges, charm her ex back into her life, and pull off a stunning wedding all in one weekend?

My review

Dial A for Aunties – Jesse Sutanto
A murder, a wedding, a thief, a big family and some romance. This book has it all!

Meddy Chan is set up by her mother on a blind date and ends up killing the man, accidentally of course! From here Meddy does not contact the police, but instead enlists the help of her mum and aunts. The dead body ends up in some strange places, to say the least and I was on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen to it next. Jesse Sutantro’s writing is comical and very clever.

The characters in this novel are hilarious and they each give a new dimension to the story as it moves along. Meddy’s family are Indo-Chinese and the novel is rich in culture and traditions. This made the book truly delightful. Meddy learns a lot about herself in this novel and how she can balance her loyalty to her family and what she wants in her life. It is a novel of self discovery.  With such a loving family, it is easy to see how one would want to please them. Her Aunts have answers for everything and will support their family to the ends of the earth. The characters are extra lovable because of their strength, craziness and loyalty. Jesse Sutanto ‘s character development is fantastic!

The family wedding business leads  Meddy to work with her ex! This is the man she thinks about constantly and wishes they were together still. The timing is not ideal… Meddy’s life is chaos! The antics that occur as Meddy attempts to keep the body out of sight and away from her ex, had me laughing out loud.

The storyline sounds crazy… And it is! It also weaves together to create a story that is fast paced and perfectly fits together.

I have never read a book quite like this before. It is unique, quirky and had me in stitches. I can’t wait to read more from Jesse Sutanto. I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone who needs a good laugh!! This is one of the funniest books I have ever read and would have to be one of the best books of 2021!
Thank you @harlequinaus for #gifting me a copy of this novel. @jesseqsutanto
